Biological significance

➤ Bromine is localized in biological fluids (blood), kidneys, liver, and most of all in brain cells (part of the pituitary gland);

➤ Bromine enhances inhibition rather than reduces excitability of the nervous system.

➤ It functions as a catalyst in the synthesis of enzymes: pepsin, lipase and amylase.

➤ Regulates the thyroid gland: helps prevent endemic goiter.

Excess in the body

➤ Leads to dysfunction of the endocrine gland, which causes the development of hypothyroidism.

➤ Promotes rapid excretion of chloride ions by the renal structures.

➤ It causes neurological and mental disorders.

Deficiency in the body

➤ Dyssomnia is observed;

➤ Leads to anemia.

➤ It is used in the treatment of the initial stages of hypertension, central nervous system disorders, cardiovascular diseases and peptic ulcer disease.

Unconventional medicine

➤ The use of bromine mineral waters is recommended for neuropsychiatric disorders: vegetative-vascular dystonia, neurodermatitis (VSD).

➤ Immediately wash off liquid Br droplets on hands with water or a soda solution.

Interesting facts

➤ Bromine is present in soil in the form of ions.

➤ Br accumulates in beans and seaweed. Mushrooms contain a lot of Br.

➤ Transparent KBr crystals are used to make lenses that transmit infrared rays.

➤Bromochloromethane is used as a fire extinguisher.
