Biological significance

➤ 15 mg of Iodine is localized in the thyroid gland.

➤ Biosynthesizes thyroid hormones, such as thyroxine, triiodothyronine (T3) and tetraiodothyronine (T4); supports hydroelectrolytic processes and helps to maintain the immune system.

➤ Iodine content in the blood is 10-5-10-6%.

➤ It has antibacterial properties, which helps prevent infections.

Excess in the body

➤ An excess of iodine causes dysphagia, physiological respiratory noises, heartburn, hyperthermia, abdominal cramps, pharyngeal reflex, gastrointestinal disorders, bradycardia, which can lead to coma.

Deficiency in the body

➤ Iodine deficiency causes the formation of endemic goiter, metabolic disorders, growth retardation and hypothermia.

Drugs/dose

➤ KI is prescribed at a dose of 0.05-0.1 mg per day for the prevention of endemic goiter.

➤ I2 in the form of an alcohol solution (5 and 10%) has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

➤ Lugol's solution containing 1 g of I2 2 g of KI, 9.4 g of glycerol and 3 g of H2O is effective for lubrication of the laryngeal mucosa.

➤ 131I and 133I isotopes are used to treat thyrotoxicosis and thyroid carcinoma.

➤ Preparations containing iodine, such as cardiotrust, serezin, are in demand for use in X-ray examinations of the kidneys, blood vessels, heart, gallbladder and other body structures.

Conventional medicine

➤ Iodine solution has antibacterial properties, so it is used as a disinfectant for wounds, scratches and ulcers.

➤Iodine ointment is used to reduce swelling, boils, skin infections and psoriasis.

➤ Iodine preparations are used as inhalations for respiratory system diseases (bronchitis and ARVI), as well as for arthritis and rheumatism.

➤Iodized salts are a useful component of a healthy diet.

➤Organic compounds of iodine are widely used as contrast agents for X-ray diagnostics.

Unconventional medicine

➤ Mineral waters with iodine content are recommended for general atherosclerosis and thyroid hypofunction.

➤ Iodine mesh on the back and chest area is used for pleurisy and severe chest cough, and on the lower abdominal cavity - in case of inflammatory processes of the reproductive system in women.

➤ Iodine alcohol solution can be used to relieve hematomas and distension.

Toxic effect/antidote

➤ If air is drawn into the lungs, upper respiratory tract injuries may occur, accompanied by severe cough, chest pain, and cephalgia.

➤ If concentrated iodine solutions are swallowed, burns of the esophagus and stomach may occur.

➤ 2-3 g of iodine is fatal to the body.

➤ There is no specific antidote.

Interesting facts

➤ Natural iodine is a single isotope 127I.

➤ Iodine crystals conduct electric current.

➤ At temperature, solid iodine changes to a gas state.

➤ To obtain an aqueous solution of iodine, add KI.

➤ The oxidation states of I2 are -1, +5, +7, and +8 in compound IO4.

➤ The Chinese code of 1567 BC recommended seaweed for the treatment of goiter.

➤ AgI and PbI2 disperse in a storm cloud and cause rain.
