➤ It causes conjunctivitis, xerophthalmia, pink eye, irritation and inflammation of the eye.

➤ As a catalyst for cracking, alkylation, hydrogenation and polymerization reactions.


➤ The radioisotope 177Lu is used for the manufacture of drugs containing radioactive isotopes and in the treatment of cancer by targeted radionuclide therapy.

Toxic effect/antidote

➤ Gastrointestinal disturbances and skin irritation may be accompanied by cephalgia, vertigo, pharyngeal reflex, cough, as well as irritation of the external body integuments and CNS disorders.

➤ Lutetium is the last lanthanide, the heaviest (9.849 g/cm3 ), the most refractory (melting point 1700 ± 50 oC), and one of the most expensive.
