Biological significance

➤ Mercury ions act as electron acceptors during the photosynthetic process.

➤ 0.02-0.05 mg of Hg is absorbed into the structural elements of the human body per day.

➤ It accumulates mainly in the organs of the excretory system, most often in the kidneys, with a smaller part in the liver.

➤ It has a positive effect on the phagocytic activity of white blood cells.

➤ Inhibits the work of the 1H group of enzymes, but forms stable complex compounds with proteins.

Excess in the body

➤ There is a violation of normal physiological activity: a decrease in performance, and as a result - rapid fatigue, memory impairment and cephalgia.

➤ In some cases, catarrhal syndrome of the upper respiratory tract, gum bleeding, mild upper limb tremor, and gastrointestinal disorders may develop

➤ Structural damage to neurons occurs, which leads to impaired formation and transmission of nerve impulses.

➤ Inhibition of protein metabolism and breakdown of monosaccharides is characteristic.

Deficiency in the body

Drugs/dose

➤ HgCl2 (Sulema) 30mg in 1 tablet - antiseptic

➤ Hg2Cl2 (calomel) 1:1000 - laxative effect, choleretic effect.

➤ HgO is a component of ointments used in dermatology and ophthalmology

Mercurius solubilis Hahnemanni

➤ Mercury gauges are in tonometers.

➤ Mercury-quartz lamps are used to treat inflammation and catarrh.

Conventional medicine

➤ Hg compounds are part of a special substance in thermometers.

➤ In the dermatology industry, it is used in the form of medicinal ointments.

➤ Products containing Hg have an antiseptic effect.

Unconventional medicine

➤ Before the discovery of the first antibiotics, it was widely used to treat sexually transmitted diseases.

Toxic effect/antidote

➤ The concentration of mercury vapour in the air above 0.2 mg/m³ causes acute poisoning of the human body.

➤ Cumulative poison. It is not mercury itself that is toxic, but the compounds it forms in the human body. Manifestations: intestinal upset, vomiting, swollen gums, weak heartbeat. Spilled Hg is bound by KMnO4, S, FeCl3.

➤ Hg vapours affect the central nervous system, primarily the cerebral cortex, with poisoning causing a metallic taste in the mouth, burning stomach pain, vomiting, and bloody diarrhoea.

➤ Antidote: unitiol, antiplasmic venom, symptomatic therapy, milk, egg white.

Interesting facts

➤ Mercury is the heaviest liquid, 13.6 times heavier than water.

➤ Hg vapours in a vacuum give off ultraviolet radiation.

➤ Hg is present in fluorescent light bulbs. "Rattling mercury" Hg(ONC) is an explosive substance.

➤ Hg itself and all its compounds are poisons. Lavoisier isolated oxygen from red Hg in 1775.

➤ At t = 4.12 ℃, mercury becomes a superconductor.

➤ Nuclear turbine generator on space stations.
