Biological significance

➤ An intracellular element.

➤ It affects the functioning of muscle fibers, the central nervous system, and the transmission of nerve and muscle impulses. It maintains heart rate (Ca antagonist), diffuse pressure, muscle tone, stabilizes blood pressure, stabilizes gastric acidity, regulates water balance, kidney function and K-Na pump, cofactor of enzymes, causes resting and action potential.

➤ Participates in protein synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism.

➤ Contained in blood and cell protoplasm.

Excess in the body

➤ Causes hyperkalemia, depresses myocardial contractility, causes arrhythmias and plegia, weakness, and sudden cardiac arrest.

Deficiency in the body

➤ Hypokalemia accompanied by unstable psychoemotional state, chronic fatigue, seizures, cardiovascular disease, swelling of the extremities, somnolence, dizziness, and glucosuria.

Drugs/dose

➤ KCl (potassium chloride) - 1 g 4-5 times a day, in case of heart rhythm disturbances

➤ Asparkam - K,Mg - asparaginate, 1-2 tablets, 3 r/d, in case of heart rhythm disorders

➤ CH3COOK - 5-10 g - daily dose, diuretic.

➤ K-orotate - 0.25-0.3 g, 2-3 r/d, for arrhythmias, liver diseases.

Conventional medicine

➤ Treatment and prevention of hypokalemia and arrhythmia.

Unconventional medicine

➤ Potassium permanganate KMnO₄ is a disinfectant. Food products containing potassium compounds are recommended for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases;

➤ An integral component of homeopathic medicines.

Toxic effect/antidote

➤ The toxic dose is 6 g;

fatal - 14 g.

➤ Potassium dichromate K₂Cr₂O₇ - causes burns and difficulty breathing, coughing, etc.
