170Tm is used in radiotherapy to treat certain types of carcinomas.

➤ Miniature thulium devices are used for X-ray diagnostics of tissues and organs where conventional X-ray machines cannot be used.

Toxic effect/antidote

➤ It is used in case of uremia, pulmonary toxicity, osteoporosis and CNS disorders.


➤ Antidote: In chelation therapy, chelators, such as dimercaptol, form interactions with Thulium compounds in biological fluids and ensure its excretion from the body.

➤ Thulium is the rarest of the lanthanides and the most expensive.

➤ Melting point 1550-1600 oC.

170Tm - is used for portable X-ray systems.

➤ With the help of 170Tm, symbolic marks were discovered on the bronze surface of an Assyrian helmet dating back to the 9th century BC.
